  As one example (will work in SugarCube 2.x and SugarCube 1.x, use the correct docs):

  You see a <span id="mailbox"><<click "mailbox">>
  <<replace "#mailbox">>heavily dented mailbox, whose flag is halfway up<<if not $foundLeaflet>><span id="leaflet">.  Upon further inspection, you notice that there's a <<click "leaflet">>

  The example assumes there will be a $foundLeaflet, whose initial value is false.
